Today I Heard
Today I Heard is a subproject of Today I Learned, in which I dissect the most prominent forms of music that I listen to each day. after listening to each song, I take away something the artist is trying to give to his/her listeners, whether it be simple knowledge, or a life lesson. every song has a story and today I'm hearing something new.
Music has a limitless range
September 26th, 2018. Today I heard the song "1000 Times", by the artist Hamilton Leithauser. Hamilton expresses how he has constant dreams of being with a girl that he truly loves, but in reality it can only go as far as being a fantasy. I relate to this song in many ways, considering I have experienced love. I'm also currently dreaming of being with a girl that holds a very special place in my heart, but no matter how many dreams I have of her being mine, it will never become a reality.
September 27th, 2018. Today I heard the song "Best Day Ever", by the artist Mac Miller, who tragically passed a couple weeks ago. Best Day Ever is the type of song to listen to when you're having a bad day. Each time a listen to that song, I know there are much greater days to come. The lyrics and the beat mold well together to create an inspiring track, that has me "cheesin' from cheek to cheek.."
to my life
September 28th, 2018. Today I Heard Lil Wayne's new album, "Tha Carter V." From drug use and suicide to stardom and meaning, Lil Wayne certainly had a lot to say. He touched on his impoverished beginnings in "Can't Be Broken," rapping, "In 1982, my momma take me to a space shuttle/Say now I'm raising you and ain't no baby food/Unless you go and take the neighbors' food." There is so much more to say about this album, and it relates to my father's childhood. It's inspiring to hear this masterful album, as it hits close to home for my father.
September 29th, 2018. Today I heard the song "Tongue Tied", by the band Grouplove. Tongue Tied is a vibrant song, that can instantly turn a bad day into a good day, a bad night into a good night, or even a bad life into a good life (okay I'm being a little sarcastic but you get what I'm saying). Tongue Tied is an anthem for my friends and I and it's a song that connects all of us together. Like Grouplove said, "take me to your best friend's house..".
September 30th, 2018. Today I heard the song, "Delicate", by Damien Rice. This track is filled with genuine emotions that have brought tears to my eyes, with the power of his vocals and the beat behind his voice. This song relates to my own life, because I've experienced love and felt like the only way to preserve that love was by surrounding the relationship with secrecy. This is what Damien is singing about. Both him and I see the looks on our significant other as "delicate".
October 2nd, 2018. Today I heard the beat "Lemon Haze", by Chance the Rapper and Mac Miller. The soft, soothing, trippy beat brings out the most amazing emotions I will ever feel. This is the exact reason the beat of a song, will forever be the foundation, the backbone of a song. Beats are what makes each song a hit or miss. Lemon Haze is definitely a bullseye.
October 1st, 2018. Today I heard the song "Pictures of Girls", by the Wallows. This indie-alternative band created a song about not wanting a girl's nude photos, because they believe it is rude and they also believe they are upstanding gentleman. I share the same beliefs they do, as I would never send or receive nudes to someone who wasn't my significant other, because it is not classy at all. Ultimately, "pictures of girls are not for me.."
October 3rd, 2018. Today I heard the song "When You Were Young", by the Killers. This song gives me vivid dreams of my elementary school days and the girl I had a crush on. Those memories remind me of how innocent and helpless I was. Though the song may relate to late high school memories, this song relates to an even younger version of me. This song always "has me waiting on somebody beautiful.."
October 4th, 2018. Today I heard the song "In The Room: Doesn't Matter", by Gallant. This creatively produced song argues how far we would go to be with someone we love and how most willing someone can be, when that person means a lot to them. This song speaks to me because I love my family, and I'm willing to die for them. Like Gallant says, "You jump, I jump."
October 5th, 2018. Today I heard the song "Meru", by Until the Ribbon Breaks. After this band broke up due to the lead singer, Pete, struggled with alchol abuse, this album marked their comeback. Specifically this song in my opinion. I used this song as a way to recover from personal problems I was forced into, due to an unfortunate circumstance. I am forever grateful for this band, and this song, and to"still be alive".
October 6th, 2018. Today I heard the song "Lost in the World", by Kanye West. This song not only has a hype vibe during the chorus, Kanye is telling his listeners to go out into the world to get lost and learn new things. I have travelled to many countries, and I am blessed to be able to learn something from those trips, whether it be about culture, lifestyle, food, etc. I am always "lost in the world".
October 7th, 2018. Today I heard the song "Same Old Mistakes", by Tame Impala. Tame Impala is best known for the strange and very unique, sounding beats. Same Old Mistakes is like a memory you have when you're high, and when you run into that situation again, then you try to avoid making "the same old mistakes again".
October 8th, 2018. Today I heard the song "Chamber of Reflection", by Mac Demarco. This piece of musical mastery, has it's listeners in the most chill and relaxed state of mind. When listening to the song you almost feel like your stuck inside a "chamber of reflection".
October 9th, 2018. Today I heard the track "Time", by world-renowned composer, Hans Zimmer. Playing this track on a drive home, just after the sun has set, reminds me that music can slow down time. It's an illusion. You focus on the melody of the beat, and then on the soft chorus in the background which in-turn mentally slows down time for you.
October 10th, 2018. Today I heard the song "Lucky You", by Eminem (ft. Joyner Lucas). This song is just a gem, because of Eminem's rap game and the young and upcoming rapper, Joyner Lucas providing the heat. This is definitely a lit tune that was created from pure and genuine emotion for music.
October 11th, 2018. Today I heard the song "Corners of the Earth", by Odesza. This powerful track literally blows my mind every time I listen to it. The beat is the most powerful part of this song. Odesza is arguing through the lyrics that people to need to expand their surroundings and ultimately step outside of their comfort zone. People need to travel to the "corners of the earth".
October 12th, 2018. Today I heard the song "Quiet", by the band This Will Destroy You. A singerless track, but filled with a mix of every emotion, "Quiet" just is one of those songs where you can let everything out physically and mentally. This track has helped me deal with my emotions in a healthy way, and this just goes to show that music really can be used as a recovery tune.
October 13th, 2018. Today I heard the song "Mo Bamba", by Sheck Wes. Named after NBA player, Mo Bamba, this hit song has taken over as the mosh pit song and possibly the most hyped song of 2018. I wouldn't necessarily consider this to be a great song, but it definitely gets me lit and puts me in a full send type of mood. This track also makes me feel "like I'm ballin like a motherf***in pro".
October 14th, 2018. Today I heard the song "In the House, Without a Heartbeat", by London Music Works. This dark track brings out the adrenaline inside of me. I listen to this song when I'm at the gym, benching my max, pushing away my fears. I escape the pain and allow myself to become someone new. Someone whole.
October 15th, 2018. Today I heard the song "Step Out" by Jose Gonzales. This motivational track pushes me to step outside of the comforts of my home and to seek the unknown. Seek Discomfort. This song makes me want to travel to every continent, every country, every district/state, every city, every town, every village, everywhere.
October 16th, 2018. Today I heard the song "1999 WILDFIRE" by BROCKHAMPTON. This uniquely produced track puts me in my simp mood. Strange, considering it having a more upbeat tone. This track, however, brings up memories of my past that are somewhat emotional, and hard to face. But I always remember, "they always come and go".
October 17th, 2018. Today I heard the song "The Race" by Tay-K. Tay-K is currently in prison after he was convicted of first degree murder, and he created this track while on the run from the police. Although this isn't my complete style of music, the beat is very unique and definitely overshadows some of the abusive lyrics that are put on display in the song.
October 18th, 2018. Today I heard the song "Outro" by the band M83. This song is so epic, and thrilling and it's best listened to when you're driving down the highway, with the sun setting and the windows down. This song gives me purpose and gives me the answers I am looking for in life.
October 19th, 2018. Today I heard the song "This is America" by Childish Gambino. This song tells the story from a black person's perspective throughout history, and even still today toxic pop culture is favored over real-world problems. Gambino's track became a big hit when he released it, and definitely proved that music can be used as, sort of, a revolutionary tune.
October 20th, 2018. Today I heard the song "Paper Planes" by MIA. This track relates back to my home country in many ways. The lead singer of the band is of Indian descent. The lyrics in this song represents how life is like in India. The up tempo beat makes this song very unique as well. This song is one of my all-time favorites.
October 21st, 2018. Today I heard the song "No One Knows e like the Piano" by Sampha. This track is about how closely connected Sampha is to his piano and how he also shares that same connection with his mother. I relate to this track in many ways as I am close with my mother and music as well.
October 22nd, 2018. Today I heard the song "Closer" by The Chainsmokers. This alternative/pop track reminds me of my first relationship ever. This song came out and my ex and I were listening to it on the first date. I felt so much "closer" to her back then. If only those memories and those feelings could last an endless lifetime.
October 23rd, 2018. Today I heard the song "Electric Love" by the artist BORNS. This excellent alternative track brings back the taste of real music and passion. I love to listen to these songs when I'm in a happy, intimate mood. Long live alternative.
October 24th, 2018. Today I heard the song "Ms. Jackson" by Outkast. This classic hip hop track was influential in my relationship with my mom. We both listened to and enjoyed this song and it let us both sing our hearts out freely. I am for real.
October 25th, 2018. Today I heard the song "Away From Today" by Dan Croll.. This smooth, but upbeat, track allows me to escape my daily reality and just drift in the wind to an unknown destination. I want to seek discomfort. I want to travel "away from
October 26th, 2018. Today I heard the song "Out of my League" by Fitz and the Tantrums. This song argues that it's hard to be with a girl that's out of your league and I've come to realize that they are true. Listening to this song makes me reminisce on girls I've had crushes on, but they were always "just a dream".
October 27th, 2018. Today I heard the song "Melo Ball 1" by Zo. This meaningless but hype song, is one of the very few tracks where I can recite the whole song perfectly. This song gave me confidence in my vocal skills as I utilized my voice's power, speed, and skill.
